What is Raynaud's

Raynaud's is a disorder whereby the small blood vessels in the extremities (generally the fingers and toes)are overly sensitive to temperature changes. Affecting more women than men, Raynaud's can be found in 3-20% of the population. A majority of sufferers are not even aware of the condition. This phenomenon can even affect the nose and ears. During a flare up, the blood supply to the extremities is interrupted. The lack of blood supply to the arteriesmakes them contract spasmodically. At first this causesa white discoloration of the skinthenoften turns blue. As the blood flow returns, many patients find the affected areas turning red and feel a painful, burning sensation. Flare ups or attackscan be triggered byexposure to coldor simply touching a cold object.

Treatment

There are several methods available to treat varying degrees of Raynaud's. Milder conditions may be helped by wearing thermal gloves, socks, hats or hand/foot warmers. Vitamins, evening primrose oil, fish oil and gingko biloba have proven to be useful, more natural therapy alternatives.

For more severe cases, medication may be necessary. Some of these patientshave found success withvasodilators which help to open the constricted blood vessels.

Vibration White Finger

Individualswho regularly use vibratory tools may find themselves exhibiting this condition, even after they've discontinued their work. Known as Vibration Induced White Finger or Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS),sufferers may beeligible for compensation as it is considered a repetitive stress injury. Continued use of pneumatic drills,Slip On Safety Shoes, jack hammers, chainsaws, lawn mowers,8 Inch Safety Boots, etc... may contribute to developing VWF/HAVS.

Tips for easing Raynaud's

* Exercise may be helpful as it contributes to increasing blood flow.

* Avoid sitting for extended periods of time.

* During the colder months, exercise indoors.

* Try to avoid changes in temperature and/or touching cold objects when possible.

* DON'T SMOKE!! Smoking can reduce body temperature making one susceptible to anattack.

* Use a hair dryer to warm clothes and shoes before getting dressed.

Patients with Raynaud's should wear comfortable, thick-soledshoes that aren't overly tight. If required to wear steel toed shoes,Waterproof Slip Resistant Shoes, consider

fit easily over your existing shoes, combining the safety of a steel toe with the comfort of your favorite shoes. are an easy, affordable way to take care of your feet and meet safety requirements on the job!

Be smart.

Be safe.
